His studies have emphasized northern European art and architecture from the fifteenth through the nineteenth centuries, with a particular focus on prints and drawings. James has also studied sixth and fifth-century Athenian vase painting and the history of photography.

James aspires to teach Art History and also work as a collection curator. Since 2008, he has been working as an assistant curator with the Thrivent Financial Collection of Religious Art, an important collection of prints and drawings with a strength in old master works including many by Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt van Rijn. At Thrivent, James has been fortunate to have the opportunity to co-curate three exhibitions with the collection’s curator, Joanna Reiling Lindell.
